Food Chain vs Food Web
Organisms in an ecosystem are connected through feeding relationships. A food chain shows a single path of energy flow from one organism to another, while a food web shows the many interconnected food chains within an ecosystem. Food webs are more complex because most organisms eat more than one type of food and may have several predators. Understanding the difference between food chains and food webs helps explain how ecosystems stay balanced and how organisms depend on one another for survival.

A food chain and a food web both show feeding relationships in an ecosystem. They both explain how energy and nutrients move from one organism to another. However, they are not exactly the same.
A food chain is a simple and straight pathway of energy transfer. It shows only one possible feeding relationship. For example:
Grass → Grasshopper → Frog → Snake → Hawk
This food chain is easy to understand because it follows one path. However, real ecosystems are not usually this simple. Many animals eat more than one kind of food, and many organisms are eaten by more than one predator.
A food web is a more complex model. It is made up of many connected food chains. It shows the different feeding relationships among organisms in an ecosystem. For example, a grasshopper may be eaten by a frog, a bird, or a lizard. A snake may eat frogs, rats, or birds. A hawk may eat snakes, rats, or small birds. Because organisms have many food sources, their relationships form a web-like pattern.
A food web is more realistic than a food chain because it shows that organisms have several connections in an ecosystem. If one food source becomes unavailable, some animals may still survive by eating another food source. However, if many organisms are affected, the whole ecosystem may become unstable.
Both food chains and food webs show how organisms depend on one another for food. Both begin with producers and include consumers. Both also show the direction of energy flow using arrows. They help us understand how changes in one population can affect other organisms in an ecosystem.
For example, if the number of frogs decreases, the insects they eat may increase. At the same time, animals that eat frogs, such as snakes, may have less food. This can affect the balance of the ecosystem.
A food chain is useful when we want to explain a simple feeding relationship. A food web is better when we want to understand the whole ecosystem because it shows many connections. In real life, ecosystems are closer to food webs than food chains.
